Windhagen and Bouillon head German orthopaedic and trauma surgeons

Professor Henning Windhagen (48), Medical Director of the Department of Orthopedic of Hannover Medical School (MHH) in the Annastift, is the new President of the German Society for Orthopaedics and Trauma (DGOU). The position of Vice President of the DGOU is being taken over by Professor Bertil Bouillon (55), Director of the Department of Trauma Surgery, Orthopedics and Sports Traumatology at Klinikum Köln-Merheim. Windhagen and Bouillon jointly represent the interests of 10 000 orthopaedic and trauma surgeons.

The DGOU general assembly elected Windhagen and Bouillon to head of the DGOU in October 2013 for the period from 1 January to 31 December 2014.

Bouillon and Windhagen accepted their offices as Presidents in parallel with their DGOU office period. Windhagen is President of the German Society for Orthopaedics and Orthopaedic Surgery (DGOOC). Bouillon is President of the German Trauma Society (DGU). Also in these cases, the office period starts on 1 January 2014 and extends for one year. The DGU and DGOOC are the holding societies of the DGOU.

The scientific arrangement and management of the German Congress for Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery (DKOU) are the focus of Windhagen's and Bouillon's presidency. The congress with the theme „Knowledge generates trust“ is held from 28 to 31 October 2014 in Berlin and attracts more than 10 000 specialised domestic and foreign visitors every year.

The theme of the congress is also the programme for the orthopaedics and trauma surgery field in 2014. „We want to establish trust and take responsibility to promote patient-orientated procedures“, confirmed both Windhagen and Bouillon.

Windhagen studied medicine at Philipps University in Marburg from 1984 to 1991. This was followed by a post-doctoral fellowship at Harvard University in Boston, with a final dissertation in 1995. During his time as assistant physician, he worked, among other places, in the Trauma Surgery Department of Humboldt University in Berlin and in the Department of Orthopaedic of Hannover Medical School. His post-doctoral thesis followed in 2001 and his appointment as professor for orthopaedics at the MHH in 2006. He is currently Medical Director of the Orthopaedic Clinic at the MHH in the Annastift, Medical Director of the Diakoniekrankenhaus Annastift gGmbH and Head of the Department for Reconstructive Orthopaedics and Endoprosthetics.

Bouillon studied medicine at Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main from 1976 to 1982. After receiving his licence to practice medicine and doctoral degree in 1982, he completed his military service as a ship's physician and then specialised in surgery, trauma surgery and orthopaedics. In 1988, he completed a post-doctoral fellowship at McGill University in Montreal with a degree in epidemiology and biostatistics. This was followed by his post-doctoral thesis and his acceptance as a lecturer. In 2004, Bouillon was appointed as Professor for Trauma Surgery / Orthopaedics at Witten/Herdecke University. Since 2004 he has been managing the Clinic for Trauma Surgery, Orthopaedics and Sports Traumatology and since 2010 he has been vice medical director at Cologne-Merheim Clinic.

The DGOU is a scientific specialist society that bundles the objectives and tasks of its two constituents, the German Trauma Society (DGU) and the German Society for Orthopaedics and Orthopaedic Surgery (DGOOC). It represents the interests of the field of orthopaedics and trauma surgery regarding research, teaching, specialisation and advanced training, clinical and practical applications as well as the regulatory area of health policy jointly with the holding associations.
