Two medics from Frankfurt am Main appointed to helm of the German Society for Orthopaedics and Trauma

Both Marzi and Meurer additionally take on the presidency of their parent societies for 2017:  Marzi is president of the German Trauma Society (DGU) and Meurer is president of the Germany Society for Orthopaedics and Orthopaedic Surgery (DGOOC).

Ingo Marzi (57) studied medicine at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. After obtaining his doctorate in 1985, he received a research grant from the German Research Foundation (DFG) to work at the Department of Pharmacology at the University of North Carolina in the US (1987-1988). Marzi received his specialist qualification in surgery in 1992, and later qualified as a specialist for orthopaedics and traumatology in 2005. He earned his post-doctoral qualification in 1993 and was appointed adjunct professor at Saarland University in 1998. In 2001 he was appointed C4 professor for trauma, hand and reconstructive surgery at Goethe University Frankfurt and has been chairman and director of the Department of Trauma, Hand and Reconstructive Surgery at the University Hospital Frankfurt since 2001. Marzi served as president of the European Society for Trauma and Emergency Surgery (ESTES) in 2012 and, in this position, also headed the 2nd World Trauma Congress in Frankfurt am Main in 2014.

Andrea Meurer (50) also studied medicine at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. Meurer obtained her doctorate in 1992 and qualified as a specialist in orthopaedics in 1997 and as a specialist in orthopaedics and traumatology in 2007. She earned her post-doctoral qualification in 1999. Meurer was appointed adjunct professor at University of Mainz in 2006. In 2009 she went on to become W3 professor of orthopaedics in Frankfurt. Meurer has served as medical director and business director of the Orthopaedic University Hospital Friedrichsheim in Frankfurt am Main since 2012. In 2014 she was president of the Association of South German Orthopaedists and Trauma Surgeons (VSOU). In 2013 she was elected to the Expert Committee of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs.

As presidents of the DGU and the DGOOC, Marzi and Meurer will also be the congress presidents of this year’s German Congress of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (DKOU) , along with the congress president of the Professional Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons (BVOU), Professor Alexander Beck. The DKOU is Europe’s largest congress on this field with more than 10,600 participants. In 2017 the DKOU will take place in Berlin from 24 to 27 October. This year’s key themes will be arthroplasty and revision arthroplasty; fractures and joint injuries; pediatric orthopaedics and traumatology; polytrauma, organ injury and emergencies; prevention and training; sport-related injuries and overuse syndromes.

The motto of the DKOU 2017 is “Motion is life”. This motto highlights the core task of orthopaedics and traumatologists: To maintain people’s mobility or restore it in case of serious injury. “The motto of the congress is what drives us in our day-to-day work, research and teaching,” said Marzi. The congress presidents have this year invited the US as its guest nation. The representatives of several US specialist societies (AAST, OTA, AAOS, POSNA) will help shape the English-language programme of the congress together with other European associations, and will thus add further to the increasingly international focus of the congress. “We are looking forward to hearing about our colleagues’ findings from clinical practice and research – and, of course, to reports on recent developments in health policy,” says Meurer.

The work of the two new DGOU presidents Prof. Marzi and Prof. Meurer will be supported by the Executive Board, the General Board and 20 other bodies.
