German Society for Orthopaedics and Trauma begins 2018 with a new Executive Board

At the DGOU general meeting in October of 2017, Siebert and Windolf were elected to lead the association for the term from 01 January to 31 December 2018. Both are also assuming the presidencies of their parent companies in 2018: Siebert is President of the German Association of Orthopaedics and Orthopaedic Surgery (DGOOC), Windolf is President of the German Trauma Society (DGU).

Dr. Kladny, Deputy Secretary General of the DGOU, passed his position to Dr. Pennig to become Secretary General of the DGOU. Furthermore, he remains Secretary General of the DGOOC. Dr. Penning also assumes the position of the Secretary General of the DGU from Prof. Dr. Dr. Reinhard Hoffmann, who has left the Board.

Short bios
Werner E. Siebert (64) studied human medicine and received his doctorate from the Technical University Munich in 1981. After his time as Resident Physician at the Großhadern Clinic of the University Munich from 1982 until 1988, he held the position of Managing Senior Physician at the Clinic for Orthopaedic Surgery at the Hannover Medical School until 1994. Siebert habilitated in 1991 and then worked as a Private Lecturer for Orthopaedics and Orthopaedic Surgery. Since 1994, he has been the Medical Director of the Vitos Orthopaedic Clinic Kassel. In 1997, he was named Professor for Orthopaedics and Orthopaedic Surgery at the Philipps University Marburg and has a professorship at the University Kassel. He is certified as Specialist for Orthopaedics and Orthopaedic Surgery, Special Orthopedic Surgery as well as Physical and Rehabilitative Medicine. Siebert is an honorary member of the Austrian, Latin American, Colombian and Argentinian Societies for Orthopaedics and Traumatology. He also received an honorary doctorate from the Dnipropetrovsk Medical Academy and the University Kharkov. Since 2010, he has been a member of the Executive Committee (EC) of the German Endoprosthesis Register (EPRD). Furthermore, he holds the position of President of the German-Latin American Association for Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery (DLGOU) and is Past President of the Association of Southern German Orthopaedists. From 2014 to 2016 he was President of the European Hip Society.

Joachim Windolf (57) received his approbation in 1986, after having studied human medicine at the Goethe University Frankfurt. He also received his doctorate during the same year. From 1986 to 1995, he worked as Resident Physician at the Department of Trauma Surgery of the Goethe University Frankfurt. In 1993, he was certified as Specialist Surgeon and held the position of Senior Physician at the Department of Trauma Surgery of the Goethe University Frankfurt. Dr. Windolf habilitated in 1996 and was appointed C-2 University Lecturer for Trauma Surgery in 1999. From 1999 to 2001, he was the Acting Senior Physician at the Department of Trauma Surgery of the Goethe University Frankfurt. In 2001, he accepted the position of C-3 Professorship at the University Clinic Hamburg-Eppendorf. In 2005, Windolf was appointed University Professor and Director of the Department of Trauma and Hand Surgery at the Heinrich-Heine University Dusseldorf. Certifications as Specialist for Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery, Special Trauma Surgery followed in 2006. Windolf held the position of Dean of the Medical Faculty at the Heinrich-Heine University Dusseldorf from 2008 to 2016. He is also a member of the board of the German Association of Hand Surgery (DGH) - in 2013, he was their Congress President. He also holds positions in the Advisory Board of the AO Trauma Germany and the University Council at the Heinrich-Heine University Dusseldorf.

Bernd Kladny (57) studied human medicine at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nurnberg from 1981 to 1987. He received his doctorate there in 1988. From 1988 to 1989, he was a Research Assistant at the Orthopaedic University Clinic Erlangen. From 1989 to 1990, he worked as Resident Physician at the Trauma Surgery Clinic and the Clinic for Plastic, Hand and Reconstructive Surgery at the Hannover Medical School. From there, he switched back to the Orthopedic University Clinic Erlangen at the Waldkrankenhaus St. Marien. In 1994, he was certified as Specialist for Orthopaedics and was appointed Senior Physician. The appointment as Senior Physician for the Orthopaedic Department at the Specialist Clinic Herzogenaurach followed in 1996. During the same year, he habilitated at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nurnberg and was appointed Special Professor of the Medical Faculty. In 2007, he was certified as Specialist for Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery. Dr. Kladny was President of the Association of Southern German Orthopaedists (VSO). In 2013, he took over as the President of the German Association of Orthopaedics and Orthopaedic Surgery (DGOOC) for one year. Since 2015, Kladny has been the Secretary General of the DGOOC. During the same year, he served as Secretary General of the German Society for Orthopaedics and Trauma (DGOU), and from 2016 to 2017 as Deputy Secretary General of the DGOU.

Dietmar Pennig (62) studied human medicine at the Westphalian Wilhelm University in Münster (WWU) and at the University of Glasgow as well as the Universities in Basel and Bern (Switzerland). After his approbation, he began his professional career at the Institute for Pathology of the WWU (1982 - 1983). He completed his qualification as Surgeon also at the Clinic for Surgery and the Clinic for Trauma Surgery and Hand Surgery, also WWU. He was certified as Specialist for Surgery in 1988, sub-specialty in Trauma Surgery in 1989. Dr. Pennig was habilitated in 1991 and he was appointed Special Professor at the WWU in 1997. Since 01 January 1992, Dietmar Pennig has served as Chief Physician of the Department of Plastic, Hand and Reconstructive Surgery at the St. Vinzenz-Hospital Cologne (University Teaching Hospital of the of the University Cologne). In 2002, he was appointed Special Professor at the Albertus-Magnus University in Cologne. In 2005, he was certified as Specialist for Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery. Dr. Pennig is active in several associations, including the Association of Leading Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeons - since 2004 as National Chairman and Second National Chairman.

President of the German Congress for Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery
As Presidents of the DGU and of the DGOOC, Siebert and Windolf are also Congress Presidents of this year's German Congress for Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery (DKOU) together with the Congress President of the Professional Association for Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery (BVOU), Dr. Gerd Rauch. With more than 10,600 visitors, the DKOU is Europe's largest congress in its field. In 2018, it will take place from 23 October to 26 October in Berlin. The focus will be on digitization in O and T, infections from implants, joint replacement and revision joint replacement, fractures and joint injuries, hand and wrist, spinal column, arthroscopic surgery, sports medicine and rehabilitation

The motto of the DKOU 2018 is "We are O & T". It illustrates that the formerly separated fields of Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery have trustingly grown together 2018 is also an anniversary, the DGOU is celebrating its 10th anniversary. As a guest country, the Congress Presidents invited Great Britain this year: "We are excited for the academic and expert exchange of information across borders. We are hoping for great impulses from our British colleagues", says Dr. Siebert. Dr. Windolf explains the motto of the congress: "We strive to achieve a professional breadth while focusing on expert specialization - for that, we in O and T work together."

The work of the two new DGOU Presidents Prof. Dr. Dr. Siebert and Prof. Dr. Windolf will be supported by the Executive Board and the Joint Boards as well as 20 additional Committees.
