The German Society for Orthopaedics and Trauma (DGOU) is a medical professional society with approximately 10,500 members. It was founded in Berlin in 2008 as a non-profit organisation. The 
headquarters of the DGOU are based in Berlin.
The German Society for Orthopaedics and Trauma
As an Association Group, the DGOU combines the objectives and tasks of its two supporting associations, the German Society for Orthopaedics and Trauma (DGOOC) and the German Trauma Society (DGU), and of their members. As such, the DGOU represents the overarching and common interests of the field of orthopaedics and trauma surgery in the areas of research, teaching, education and advanced training, both in clinics and private practice, as well as in the area of public health, in order to create the framework conditions for the O&U accordingly.
The DGOU represents the interests of its members in the areas of science, healthcare and vocational policy. In close collaboration with its various groups and committees, it works effectively for all of its members in its capacity as a professional society.
Promoting Science
The DGOU promotes 
science in the field of orthopaedics and trauma surgery. Its functions include providing networks and platforms for scientific exchange, and it informs its members through the different media of their associations on the most recent advances in the field. It also achieves this through its members’ magazine, “UOMN” and through the German Congress for Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery (DKOU).
Quality and Safety
The DGOU also provides guidelines for diagnosis and treatment in the field of trauma surgery and orthopaedics. These recommendations help to support doctors in decision-making for optimal medical care for patients, and in doing so, ensuring for better levels of quality and safety in medicine.
Education and Promotion of Young Talents
Furthermore, the DGOU supports education and advanced training within the field of orthopaedics and trauma surgery: In this way, this professional society has, for example, developed special course formats for advanced training, and supports both study and research activities with prizes and fellowships. The Young Forum O&U represents the interests of younger, up-coming doctors within O&U. Acting as a network, one of its roles is to give information and advice on clinical, scientific and didactic aspects of further training.
